The handyman estimate template that survives a real job
Most handyman quotes get argued about for one reason: they are a single number. A customer cannot see what is in it, so every extra feels like a surprise. Separate the lines and most of that disappears.

Illustrative figures — substitute your own rates. The structure is the point, not the numbers.
The five blocks to always include
- Labour as its own line, in hours or days, at a stated rate. This is the line customers question least and value most.
- Materials with quantities, not a lump sum. “2 × pre-hung door” is checkable; “materials: 328” is not.
- Disposal and access. Skip it and you will do it for free.
- An assumptions line — what you found, or assumed, when you priced it.
- An exclusions line — patch and paint, electrical certification, making good after a hidden problem.
Estimate or quote?
If you have seen the whole job and it is straightforward, send a quote and hold the price. If anything is hidden — behind plaster, under a floor, inside an old frame — send an estimate and say what would change it. The document type signals the difference, but only the wording makes it real.
Two sentences worth their weight
Under notes: “Assumes existing door frames and architraves are sound. If a frame needs replacing I will confirm the extra cost before proceeding.”
Under terms: “Estimate valid 14 days. 50% deposit to schedule; balance on completion.” Both take seconds to type once and save an awkward conversation every time.
Send it before you drive away
An estimate sent from the driveway gets a decision while you are still the person standing in front of them. One sent that evening gets “let me think about it”. Save the line items you use most — “hang interior door”, “patch and sand”, “haul away” — and the next estimate is ninety seconds of work.
